Mareotis (Mareia, Arapotes) lac., a lake of Lower Egypt, at Alexandria s., in breadth 150 stad., in length 300. It communicated by numerous cuts with the Nile. Tho Alexandrians had a port on it richer than their port on the Mediterranean. The adjacent district was noted for its wine.
