In the history of a particular art or science you may trace the genealogy of the poet and the doctor back to a common source or forward to the yet wider variations of their subdivisions. The process of organic development is an increasing dif­ferentiation of species within the genus and of individuals within the species. Roughly it is true to say that this process is characterised by the increasing articulation of what is latent or undeveloped in the preceding stages. In the earlier stages of religious development particularly the difficulty lies often far more in the description or definition in words of a particular phenomenon than in understanding its nature or feeling its force.
